- Who needs an Indiana Registered Soil Scientist?
- Property owners in Indiana need the services of an Indiana Registered Soil Scientist if they’re replacing or repairing an existing septic system or constructing a new residence or commercial building that will utilize a septic system.
- Do I need to be present when you perform borings?
- It’s certainly not necessary, but having the property owner on hand gives me a better idea of what your plans are for the property. I can also gather this information through phone calls and e-mails.
- What type of permits are necessary to install a septic system?
- Please remember permits are required through the local health department prior to any installation of a septic system. As a soil scientist, I provide soil descriptions that are then reviewed by the health department. The department provides the minimum requirements for a septic system, predicated on the number of bedrooms in the residence.
- What if I have a commercial property? Is the process the same for soil borings?
- The process is the same and I also will furnish you with a pre-application to fill out and return to the Indiana Department of Health. That department will then provide a technical data sheet showing the minimum system design requirements. This typically takes 30-60 days.
- Do I mark my utilities?
- Indiana 811 is a free service and I will make contact with them and arrange for your utilities to be marked. Utilities typically can be marked within five days, but that time may vary.
- What equipment do you use for soil borings?
- I utilize a hand auger, which allows me to pull soil samples to a depth of approximately 6 ½ feet. Typically I perform three borings then furnish my written report to both you and the local health department. If requested, I can also forward the report to your installer, contractor or developer.
- Are borings the same as a perc test?
- Perc tests are no longer utilized by health departments. Today, sites are evaluated by direct soil analysis by a registered soil scientist.
